Many, at least most of, the RFC's are proposed standards and
people of use protocols that are only in draft status.
Nevertheless a protocol is a standard the second it reaches
critical mass. For instance there is no RFC nor a 'official
documented' standard for eg KaZaA, but it is a standard
because a lot of people use it, changing the protocol would
break that. Same goes with the above DNS stuff.
On similar notes, <center> wasn't in HTML, Netscape put it
in there and IE and others followed, and after that the
'standard document' got adjusted to make it work.
Same for the http://user:pass@.... thing and many others ;)

Some implementations don't do IDN either, that doesn't mean
that it isn't widely deployed ;)
