Some NIC's have multicast problems, you could try to put it in promisc + multicast,
which usually helps, another way of doing it is adding a permanent entry in
the neighbour cache on the router, which is the trick I abuse when testing
things in vmware.

Did you use any of the flaky network cards for it?
I think those drivers don't support multicast for instance.

Btw.. neat which brings me to the evil idea of maybe booting
my Amiga into NetBSD... hmmm :)
But first.... tinc support in the SixXS heartbeat clients...
